NORTH BEND, Ore. — Citing a long-standing need for additional hangar space, the Coos County Airport District has approved a program to encourage private hangar construction at Southwest Oregon Regional Airport. The recent lease of the airport’s corporate hangar to ROTAK Helicopter Services will require several aircraft owners who have rented space there on a month-to-month basis to relocate. That made it more urgent to move forward with the program developed by Airport Executive Director Rodger Craddock.

The airport reports 33 based aircraft and 25 hangars. “Aside from one recently constructed private hangar, our privately developed hangars were built more than 30 years ago. The corporate hangar’s full lease to a single operator has made the need for new space more immediate,” Craddock said.

The program offers approved developers a credit covering base land rent for up to 24 months during construction. After occupancy, the credit covers all base land rent for two years and half of base land rent for a third year. Completed projects may also qualify for reimbursement of documented eligible costs, capped at $20,000, $35,000 or $50,000 depending on hangar size and aircraft capacity. Developers would fund construction, while the District would retain ownership of the land.

Ardurra is identifying potential hangar locations and configurations on airport property as it develops the long-term Airport Master Plan. The District Board approved the incentive program on September 16, 2026. The program must receive a final review by the district's legal counsel and coordination with the Federal Aviation Administration. The board also authorized the Executive Director to make nonmaterial revisions necessary for implementation. The initial program is limited to five Board-approved projects over a three-year application period; each hangar and land lease will require separate Board approval.
